Morgenstern
For dinner, Dr. Finch makes a big fruit salad for everyone.

"Today was a perfectly good day," Caius remarks, "but we had to end it like this. C'mon."

Fuse recaps what all was discovered about Ilworth for Caius and Dr. Finch, and gives a general report.

"We put a pretty big dent in the Juries' list," Fuse says. "Some of the buildings in Ilworth are still pretty much intact, too, if we need extra space for anything. Water and power are shot, but we might be able to fix that if we care enough."

Michelle arrives not too long later. "So," she starts, "I just got off the phone with Cam. Her hospital's bioprinters got replaced today, but she said the crew that did it were new--said the contracts for workin' on those bioprinters got bought out by another company. She thought she'd give us a heads up, 'cuz of the whole monster thing."

"Thale shouldn't have any reason to hit that place again," Fuse comments. "He only went after it the first time because we were there. Should we be worried about this...? Or was this just an excuse for Cam to call Michelle?"

Michelle looks slightly confused. Caius chuckles quietly.

Dr. Finch adjusts his glasses. "It may not be an immediate concern, but it does show that things are moving. If you'll recall, part of the underlying reason for the Tobu hack was to destroy Tobu as a company--after the incident, their stocks plummeted. That made room for Row Dynamics to take over Tobu's old contracts, and for Gesenai Shirai to begin purchasing property at a greater discount. Now that neither Macland nor Gesenai are having their proverbial strings pulled, Patton Thale may be seeking to consolidate power under a different cohort. I have no doubt that whatever company brought in the new bioprinter is under Thale's influence."

"Which also means there might be somethin' happenin' with that bioprinter," Michelle says, "and any other bioprinters they're workin' on or replacin'."

"Wouldn't it be easier to just... I dunno, hack 'em?," Caius asks. "Instead o' havin' a crew go in to "fix" 'em all. If he wants to gimmick tha bioprinters, he's prob'ly got tha second, third, fourth best hackers in tha city on his payroll."

Fuse smiles a little. "Hacking every printer in the city is doable, and I'm sure all the guys Thale busted out of prison could do it. I'm not sure they could hack all those printers without getting caught once, and that'd be all it takes to raise alarms after the Tobu thing. Contracts get bought all the time, though, and new management always wants to do things their way. It looks like a dumb waste of money, but it doesn't look shifty. We know Thale's already got the cyber security guys under his thumb--that hospital's bioprinter was mad easy to get into, but you don't wanna go nuts hacking everything all the time, or you run the risk of a whistle blower letting the cat out of the bag. Owning the bioprinter repair dudes lets Thale make changes to the printer itself, and even his dirty cyber security groups are unaware."

"The left hand never knowing what the right hand does," Dr. Finch utters. "Though, it does raise a question--what changes would Thale need to make to the printer itself? If he's simply planning another Tobu-like incident, that could be done with a major string of security breaches overnight... well, like the Tobu incident was. This suggests something quieter and longer term."

"Could we hack it again?," Michelle asks. "I mean, we got in the first time."

Fuse shrugs. "I doubt it. I already counter-hacked Howler once on that hospital's printers... that whole circle of inmates would have to be stupid not to find a way to keep me from doing it again. They've had time, they've got resources, they've got the cyber security company AND the repair guys for that printer on speed dial--I would be suspicious as hell if I could get back in."

We should look into whether other hospitals are also having their bioprinters replaced, and if so, *which* hospitals- that might help us determine what sort of thing Thale might be able to do with them.

Also, thank you to Finch for keeping us safe from scurvy. (Seriously, with all the pizza and such we've been eating lately, I was getting a bit concerned.) If he wants a more Caius-friendly method of getting vegetables into people, maybe we could try homemade guacamole next time? It's really easy to do!

Pat the baby Red on its little head and call it cute. Also, hug everyone.

Good to hear. Once our schedule clears up, we can start renovating some work space for some blood science.
Setting up power should be easy enough, though how we would set up water without someone getting suspicious is beyond me at the moment.

Which reminds me, don't suppose we know where to get a potted plant? There's a fairly low maintenance research experiment I would like to try.

Care to share with the class? It's really hard for other commenters to agree or disagree with your plans when you don't ever tell us what they are.

Would be testing the effects of watering a plant with a blood/water mixture, shifting towards blood over time.
If successful, could learn to generate "plant" matter out of blood. If not, we have a decorative plant for the bunker.

Not a bad idea, we could definitely give it a try. It shouldn't be hard to get a small plant for the bunker-- the one issue is we'd either need one that grows fine in artificial light, or we'd need to get a grow light for it. Or we could just stick it in TARDIS Town.

We kinda already know the effects of blooding a plant. It's not terribly useful on account of plants have extremely limited senses and very poor mobility. It's why plants are pretty much the bottom of the food chain.
Also would not be fond of the idea because we can sense when something dies. We don't want to just blood everything willy-nilly.

yeah, dude. this is kinda stupid and also annoying. you kind of need to actually make a suggestion in a comic that is powered by suggestions. your mysterious bullshit doesn't work too well if no one can figure out what the hell you're on about.

Yay for food!

Either update our disguise game (at the very least for Fuse so he can go into Southden tomorrow) or go to bed early so we can get an early start tomorrow.

We might also want to update Jury about the bioprinter matter. She mentioned if we can tie Thale to cult-magic, that'd get the federal government on him big-time. Unfortunately, the only way I can see Jury tracing the bioprinter guys back to Thale panning out is if Thale ends up using them to bioprint magic meat (in essence they'd serve as his version of a "red").
It'd be too little too late, but at least Jury could immediately pin the incident on Thale and get damage control in place.
