You go to get Fuse, Zene, and Crease from the barracks, and tell them you brought food. You ask Fuse if he wants to go with you to bury Dr. Camp, and the remains of the blade man.

"Yeah," Fuse says. "That sounds alright."

You all eat, and Dr. Finch confirms he's quite done with the charred corpse. You, Dr. Finch, and Fuse head to Bunker D, suit up... and step out onto Mars. It takes Dr. Finch a little while to get over the fact that he's actually walking on Mars, but after that, the three of you start to bury the dead.

You bring up atmospheric pressure, and wanting to bury the bodies somewhere that's well under 600 pascals--it's not foolproof, but it would decrease the likelihood of the bodies encountering liquid blood.

Fuse and Dr. Finch both give you odd stares, but very different kinds of odd.

"What the hell are you talking about?," Fuse asks.

"The temperature at which liquids become vapor varies based on pressure," Dr. Finch begins, sounding slightly surprised that you mentioned it. "Blood normally evaporates at about 212 degrees Fahrenheit, but at higher altitudes it takes less heat because of the reduced atmospheric pressure. On our planet, bodily fluids begin to evaporate inside the human body at about... oh, 60,000 feet, if the individual isn't wearing a protective suit--Armstrong's limit, I believe it's called. The atmosphere on Mars is so thin that liquids evaporate on the surface... however, we may not be able to accurately gauge how far under the surface blood could stay liquid. We could risk exposing the bodies to raw Mars blood, with... well, unknown effects. Although..."

Dr. Finch, without explaining his plan, turns and hurries back into the bunker. Fuse turns to you and shrugs.

While you wait for Dr. Finch to do... whatever it is he's going to do, you ask Fuse if he found out where he learned about the book.

"Yeah. Kinda," Fuse says, hesitantly. "I learned about the book before all this started... some random website mentioned it, like, before I met you guys. That doesn't... feel right, though." Fuse shakes his head. "Like, I feel like I would've mentioned it sooner if I knew about it the whole time. I thought it might be Nil screwing with my memories, but... he didn't really add whole memories, did he? He just... made old ones feel different. I dunno. And why did I think I got it from Lydia? Where did that come from? The whole thing's screwy."

Dr. Finch returns with some odd instrument. He checks it... and then he nods.

"The temperature around the bunker is higher than normal for the Martian atmosphere," Dr. Finch states. "The pressure is normal, though--normal for Mars, at least. I suspect the bunker is putting off prolific heat, which... should alter the calculations a substantial amount. With Mars' normal atmospheric pressure, it should be too warm around the bunker for liquid blood to be dwelling beneath the surface."

"So... these guys won't be coming back as zombies, then?," Fuse asks.

"No," Dr. Finch replies flatly. "We are quite safe from the threat of the dead rising again."

You, Fuse, and Dr. Finch bury the sword man and Deaglan Camp. Dr. Finch plants crude, wooden grave markers. Afterward, Dr. Finch takes some time to admire the view of Mars, and he and Fuse talk about non-corpse related things. They joke about how sporting eyewear under a space helmet was a bad idea.

"I need my glasses," Dr. Finch says. "You, sir, do not have an excuse."

You take the opportunity to get in touch with Red.

Entering your mind space, you start searching for a clean uniform for her.

"Why?," she asks. "I don't understand." Red still sounds a bit tired.

You tell her that she's you, and you're her. You wouldn't go running around with messy hair and a bloody uniform if you could avoid it. You help her change into a clean uniform, and then you sit down with her, and begin to brush her hair.

Red sighs. "I don't get you sometimes."

I like all of this. No clue what to do now tho.

Thou art I...
And I am thou...
Thou hast established a new bond...

But seriously, we should dote on Red more often. It's adorable AND I think it helps her understand humanity better (even if this event isn't a clear example).

If we can get anything more done either in regards to the book or prep for the infiltration of the church, we can do that. Otherwise we should go to bed.
We can ask about cat and pigeon names tomorrow morning.

If after checking in on everyone no urgent issues/emergencies maybe make another golem and explore where that minecart leads?

What if Fuse got knowledge of the book from your subconscious red during a sync, but his mind cannot process the alien intelligence behind THE BLOOD, so it makes stuff up?

Hug our Red and thank her.

Awwhhh, super cute moment with our Red. <3 Finish brushing, apply hug. ^-^

Hair-grooming is a human ritual! In basically every culture, women do each other's hair. We can explain to Red that it's just part of our human heritage that we want her to experience, because getting your hair did is viscerally calming and maybe it'll help her feel better because even thought she's not human, she's still our Red and we're human. If nothing else, it's a social bonding activity!

Woo, science at work ! Probably thanks to the Finch's ever-growing knowledge pool Jane has access too subconsciously.

Seconding everyone's thank-you hug for our favourite red. Then maybe check on the proto-Juries; and of course start checking on Jury herself to find out if she needs some assistance with her current quandary.

Good show so far.

I am amused by Red's lack of understanding with the fuss.

Consult your steam tables as blood has similar properties to water, although not quite the same. The values will be in the same ballpark at least.

Blood's extra contents don't change the boiling point very much, if anything it would boil earlier rather than later (and leave solid deposits when everything dries out).
pkrankow 30th Jan 2018, 9:21 AM edit delete reply
Salts both increase boiling temperatures and decrease freezing temperatures. I don't know what protiens do, and oils can be just odd in behavior with regard to boiling and freezing, with different oils having different transition temperatures.

Vapor pressures should remain unchanged.

Considering milk, which contains way more proteins and fat than blood, still boils at 100°C, blood won't be very different.

For some reason I was thinking about distillation when I wrote about the lower boiling point. I blame hugs.

Since we are outside anyway, we might as well look into where the mine track leads.
And take a minute to take in the view, and think about the fact that we are standing on Mars!
Fishbulb 3rd Feb 2018, 12:39 PM edit delete reply
I'm not sure this is the best idea without at least preparing for certain possibilities. Specifically, that the mine was where the Mars blood was found. If the gang is planning on searching it, it might be best to send a (non-blooded) drone to investigate first, if possible.

Hair brushes time, and let's give her a fresh nurse uniform, and a flower!!

Red makeover time!
Twyll 30th Jan 2018, 2:11 AM edit delete reply
While we're on Mars, we should also pick up an actually-from-this-dimension flower to give to MomRed when we get back. (I would've called it a "meatspace" flower, since I like "meatspace" as an antonym to "virtual," but when dealing with The Blood, you could argue that the red is actually more of a meatspace than our dimension!)
pkrankow 30th Jan 2018, 4:34 PM edit delete reply
Mom's Red deserves a flower, yes.

In brainspace er, bloodspace(?) if it can be thought of it can exist. Go for it if it feels good.

So what are our priorities right now? I'm thinking we need to map out the bunker and find some sort of army, either with the people galvanized into action or a robot factory that might be hidden somewhere in the bunker along with an armory.

Not sure if it would be best to post suggestions here or on the Discord, but at some point soon, the gang may have to bite the bullet and try to communicate with whatever is in Bunker C. Speaking with it might help it improve its vocabulary and determine if it's a threat or not. If opening the door is out, would it make sense to use an acetylene torch to pop a hole in the door and snake some sort of camera through (if possible)?
pkrankow 3rd Feb 2018, 9:43 PM edit delete reply
No, burning a hole is bad. An bore scope camera is cheap but needs about 6mm to fit. I tape one into a plastic pipe and jam it through fiberglass insulation to look in walls often enough. Works with my phone, ebay about $20.

An actual fibrt optic borescope can go through .5mm, but is $2k and has very little depth of field. However we have a hospital we can pilfer for the medical type.

Pass this through the gap, if a gap exists, or nothing.

Frankly I am for not investigating this, it identified itself as "hell"

Otoh, it could be something like a Proto Jury but damaged. Still I think leaving it alone is better.

for the record, only suggestions posted here in the comments section are taken into account. any suggestions posted in the discord are not. this makes it easier for MM to get an idea of what people want to do without risking it being buried under a mountain of meandering conversation.
