You give Michelle's jacket to Caius, and tell him not to stay out too long. You emphasize that this isn't completely Caius's fault--society put Zene where he was, Thale put Queen out there, and Thale put you all in the positions that you're in. Caius did what he thought was best with the hand he was dealt.

You also offer him a level effect.

"Sure," he says. "That sounds alright."

You level Caius, and then you head back inside. You check on Fuse, and what he's found out about Zene's parents.

"I told Zene about your telepathy thing," Fuse says. "We need him in on this conversation. Shit's, uh, a little weirder than we thought."

You say hello to Zene.

"Oh," Zene replies. "Uhh... hi."

"So," Fuse begins, "repeat what you told me, about what your parents do."

"Uh, sure," Zene says. "My dad's the manager at a fast food place, and my mom works for some church. She got Dad to volunteer there a couple times, and I think she's tryin' to hook him up with a job there, too, but he likes bein' a manager too much. Mom says the pay's better, though."

"You remember which church?," Fuse asks.

"Yeah," Zene says. "S'one of those new ones that opened up in the lowers--weird crosses, everybody wears red. House of Enyo, I think?"

"And where'd you first do Queen at?," Fuse asks.

"Mom had some," Zene replies. "They drug test at Dad's work, so he didn't do any. Mom had plenty, though--shared with friends, gave me some extra to hook my guys up with. She smokes level and does other stuff all the time, so I didn't think it was all that weird. I mean, since then I've kinda seen Queen everywhere, but... that was the first time I got some."

Ohh shoot.

Looks like we have somewhere to either investigate or stay the hell away from.

Welp. We no longer need to fret about getting Zene involved. He was involved before we even met him.

His mom is in a heap of trouble and we have no idea how deep she is in this thing but we know it's too deep for safety. I have no idea how to go about communicating this fact to a vulnerable teen.
Swagner 25th Dec 2017, 11:02 PM edit delete reply
But we already knew that: not that his family was directly involved in the drug pushing, but that they were almost certainly compromised. The question isn't whether he has a dog in this fight; he does, as does almost everyone in the city. The question is whether or not he's safer working with the party or not (and by extension, whether or not he brings danger to the rest of the party), and there aren't many places in the world more dangerous than our immediate vicinity.

I think this DOES change things, because his family being more deeply involved means that other places are automatically more dangerous for him-- he won't be able to disappear easily. His mom will probably panic at his absence and we now know that she might actually have the connections to be able to mobilize the cult to search for him, either out of motherly love or out of fear of what he knows about the Church of Enyo. This won't be just Thale doing his usual manipulative thing, which only has a certain degree of reach and is something he has to focus on, but a large group of people who might not even have to be manipulated into tracking him across the globe.

Also, I don't necessarily think that just being near us is dangerous. Lydia and Grizwald are fine, after all. It's going out and *doing dangerous things* with us that is dangerous. And we've been consistently able to keep our friends alive despite doing things like invading a well-defended radioactive drug lab.

The fact that Caius is alive to be having this moral crisis, after having taken a radioactive hit shot, proves that we *can* defend those around us. And we don't have to take Zene with us on the risky missions. Dr. Finch hasn't had any trouble while being mission control-- he was attacked and captured while out in the field. And since he does tend to stay behind, it's not like we'd be leaving Zene all by himself.

I think there are enough arguments in favor of keeping Zene with us that we ought to let his vote be the deciding one instead of dismissing the option out of hand.

Yeaaaah Caius isn’t gonna like this, but we don’t really have a choice. If he blabs to his family about us, we are screwed. I think at this point we should recruit him, or have him stay in the Mars base until things blow over. Though, we need to secure the door so he doesn’t go running onto mars. Quick question, have we buried the plant man? I can’t remember.....
P.s. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!

Also tell Zene not to eat the plants growing on the floor -.- he is a teen, and they can do some dumb stuff. I just don’t want him to end up like the plant guy or something.

I'm not so worried about him blabbing to his family (we can prevent blabbing, after all, as we did with Macland and with Caius when we had him faint before getting a truth serum used on him). I'm more worried about his family attacking him or trying to bring him in to Thale. Even if we can prevent Zene from revealing info on us even under torture, we don't want him harmed in the first place.

If this were only about the risk to *us,* it would be an easy decision-- kill him or keep him captive. But the issue here is a moral issue, about the risk to *him.* That is much more difficult to solve.

Yeah.... Hmmm.... I really want to explore mars before we go off to danger if we decide to scout out the church. I’ve been super curious \(*^*) I vote we go to mars first and explore :D

House of Enyo? Hmm.

Looks like Zene's mom's the one who got Zene into something too deep. This is not going to be an easy situation to tap into. He said 'since then I've kinda seen Queen everywhere', which seems to imply his mom was into this and was one of the earliest distributors before it really started to proliferate the lower tiers. Any link between Brother Harold Hope, and House of Enyo that we can try to find or discern?

'Everybody wears red' means bad news all around, but maybe we can trace this back a bit. If Hope is perhaps at the root, maybe we can work at really cutting this before it spreads? Hm. Maybe.

(Caius, you sweetheart. Come back in asap.)

I do love the bow. Makes we want to get another hair decoration after the loss of our flower.
The holiday-appropriate, weather-inappropriate dress is nice as well.

And hey, fireplace finally gets used!

The main problem we had with blooding the parents was the assumption they'd both be Queen'd and it'd be a fight. We might be able to approach the father at the restaurant as an angle for getting the mom blooded.
Just a thought.

We should ask Zene if Harold Hope ever came up in conversation with his mother/at her church. Maybe we can find out a tie; and by extension, find out who to infiltrate/interrogate next in our quest to find the Queen distribution/manufacturing place.
If nothing else, that church HAS to get Queen shipments. Maybe, hopefully, Thale is more direct with the churches and doesn't use a clueless middleman to make deliveries.

There you go option 3 of previous it is, at least for Zene's mom. Son goes missing and she'll hunt us down and not stop for anything or anyone once Thale gets his hooks into her.

Finally caught up again. You leave for a month, and so much happens!

Fistly, happy holidays everyone :) loved the Christmas sprites :)

In my view Zene has gotten a bad hand to play. As I see it, his only option is to leave the city, and wait for us to tell him, it's safe to come back.
We could probably get a message to his father, saying he is all right, but have to lay low for a while.
Considering his life, up to this point, his parents probably won't be too surprised.
We might get Shirai to help him out, but it might be better to not get him involved with Mac and Shirai.
