You try to make a run for where you think Prophet is, but the big guy grabs you from behind. You slip through his arms, weaving through his attacks long enough to get to one of your needles.

He lunges; you stick him with the needle.

You don't even get to actually inject him before he reacts--he grabs his head

and he snaps his own neck.

He sinks, his body limp against the wall. You withdraw the needle, instead hurling it at the man in the teal hood.

You manage to inject him, just in time for a massive wound to open across his throat.

With the man in the hoodie dead, you can see Prophet again, bloodied knife in hand.

You wrestle with Prophet, briefly.

You feel Dr. Finch die.

He wheezes, terrified eyes wide behind his scarlet lenses.

You feel Caius die.

You twist his wrist, taking the knife from his hand.

You feel Fuse die.

Prophet falls to the floor, crawling backward as much as he can, gasping, hissing. Tears fill your eyes.

And then

Prophet stops.

He chokes, his head hitting the floor.

He stops breathing.

You stare at him, crying, angry.

You shove the knife into his heart.

You know he's already dead.

You know because you can feel Michelle again. Alive. Hurt, but alive. Everyone is.

But you just... stab him. Square in the chest. Over and over. Thin, gray blood oozes from the wound, and from beneath his mask.

Ok. Ok. Focus. Michelle is NOT SAFE YET. We need to get here out of there quickly. There's an alternative way into the basement, ya? Go there, NOW!

Also, congrats Morgen. You managed to push everyone's berserk button with that.
Macheman7 23rd Sep 2017, 12:46 AM edit delete reply
Oh... Oh god, yes. I was right.
I was so afraid I was wrong.
Also, uh, maybe don't get any of that blood on your hands.
Mochi 23rd Sep 2017, 12:49 AM edit delete reply
now that's one

i would be happy

MM... this whole sequence starting from the beginning of the illusion ripped the heart out of my chest, stomped all over it, threw it through a blender, poured it out all over the angers and the sads and then gave it back to me mixed with tears. Just... WHAT IS THIS WEBCOMIC DOING TO MEEE *sobs hysterically*
Akasha 23rd Sep 2017, 12:53 AM edit delete reply
ngl I froze up for a moment when I first saw that death message before it hit me. And then the agitation kicked in. The multi-illusion shenanigans did not help, either. Now, I'm just kinda laughing at this juncture because I really wasn't expecting us to get rid of Prophet so soon. Not that I'm complaining, anyways.

...Though, this does leave one important question. Where the hell is Nimrod? Did Prophet feel like he wasn't necessary for this, or...?

I thought of ways for him to escape, but once this started really rolling and I saw how people reacted, I was like "no... no, he kinda needs to die here"

both for the emotional relief of the audience, and because now that the scene's played out this gimmick would never work again
Mochi 23rd Sep 2017, 1:12 AM edit delete reply
thank you, matt. really.

i've updated the characters page with prophet in his rightful place.
rufiangel 23rd Sep 2017, 12:51 AM edit delete reply
We have to go help Michelle now. Perceive through her, find out what she's up against and do what we have to. Force the faux-level in if we can't calm down fast enough, and let's go.

But holy crap that was intense.

As a writer, I didn't anticipate this happening here, now, and with this set of circumstances--but the basic premise was something I planned since the moment I came up with Prophet.

"What do you think Blondie's afraid of?," Fuse finally asks.

"Nothin'," says Michelle. "Maybe scared of the rest of us losers dyin'. She came back from the dead an' regrew a chunk of her body already. She drugs people with her mind. Scary stuff is scared of her. She don't get scared."

As a person, though, I felt absolutely fucking awful writing this whole section, and I think at least one person legit quit reading the comic at the start of the fake out. Somebody rated that page a 1, and I just kind of nodded and said "yeah, I deserve that."

This, and the Tamagotchi sequence have been the hardest things for me to write. I don't know if it's normal to apologize for evoking an emotional response but I kind of want to apologize.
Varil1024 23rd Sep 2017, 12:53 AM edit delete reply
You did good. It's a good sequence. A damn emotional punch to the gut, but good story telling, don't apologize for that.
Baeronius 23rd Sep 2017, 12:54 AM edit delete reply
The highest of highs are only known because the lowest of lows.

Without one the other cannot exist, because then everything would be... the same.

Writing is all about enthusisam and presentation, as well as world building.

So in terms of a story, you done good.
Kitty 23rd Sep 2017, 12:56 AM edit delete reply
It's okay, sometimes a story needs to be told and the characters won't let you not tell it. God DAMN you had us worried, though :P

You have a gift. A gift for *emotional torture,* yeah, but... wow.

Kitty 23rd Sep 2017, 12:59 AM edit delete reply
Also, the sheer rage we all felt is a pretty good sign of how attached we are to your characters XD So, that's a good thing! Good job at creating lovable characters that people really connect with... to the point of sheer seething fury at them being threatened XD
PurpleKetchup 23rd Sep 2017, 12:57 AM edit delete reply
Please keep doing it as you see fit - I feel most readers are relying a bit too much on plot armour. That's the best wake-up call you could devise.

You'd make an excellent DM, btw.
rufiangel 23rd Sep 2017, 12:58 AM edit delete reply
It was a powerful sequence that was harrowing to live through update-by-update. When other people read through this archive in one binge they will not know what we went through XDDD

But don't apologise Matt for evoking emotional responses like this one, I mean, it put me through the emotional wringer but that's because I'm so attached to all of these characters. ;v;*)b

... Okay, I admit, I kind of sort of will take just a tiny little bit of that apology and accept it, if only because MY BRUISED AND BROKEN FEEEEELS (but we're all okay now)
Mochi 23rd Sep 2017, 12:59 AM edit delete reply
ngl i was this fucking close to completely bailing

you pulled a hell of a fast one on us, matt. but it was good, it was really good. an emotional rollercoaster. i legit had a small emotional break down when i read that line. you should see the chat logs between me and kitty on discord, haha.

God no this was great I'm goddamn invested, like SHIT MAN THAT WAS GOOD.
Baeronius 23rd Sep 2017, 12:52 AM edit delete reply
He may have retreated.
Under cover of illusion and darkness.

A decoy is an easy thing to rage at.
We don't even know if it was a body double.
Kitty 23rd Sep 2017, 12:52 AM edit delete reply
Say, can we make use of that gross blood Prophet has? I bet Carpenter's monstrosity wouldn't much like having that inside it.

Also I sure hope we can get Michelle to safety with time to spare to loot these bodies; I want to know what they have on them and if it could be useful to us. And also because we deserve all their stuff, after what they put us through.
PurpleKetchup 23rd Sep 2017, 12:54 AM edit delete reply
Holy hell that was bad. Good thing I wasn't here for that stunt.

...Jane should definitely inject the Prophet's corpse with her blood to kill his Queen link. Just in case, but especially if he has some regenerative powers on top of his fear-o-matic.

Thank Caius and unsync, then rush to Michelle. Ask if Fuse can help with the cyberthing's remote control if only temporarily. In such a poorly maintained hospital, maybe some walls crumbling have exposed wirings to rig some mini faraday cage or something.
Baeronius 23rd Sep 2017, 12:56 AM edit delete reply
The radioactive blood will mess with anything we try to do. We may end up doing something... completely unwanted.
PurpleKetchup 23rd Sep 2017, 12:59 AM edit delete reply
Radioactive blood burns when she takes over from Thale, but that's fine. Jane can take it right now, she's high on adrenaline and white-hot burning rage.

We must cut this guy's Queen. Even as a corpse puppet he would be terrible. Don't take any chances. Do it right now.
Akasha 23rd Sep 2017, 12:57 AM edit delete reply
Alright, now that they've all been dealt with... Do regain your composure. Michelle is probably still dealing with the bio-mech and we should probably get to the car and get the jumper cables, like we were planning. Also, I know it's already been mentioned before, but don't touch Prophet's blood. /Maybe/ get a sample of it just to see what the fuck it is, but even then, I'm iffy on that.
Varil1024 23rd Sep 2017, 1:00 AM edit delete reply
Okay. We need to check on Michelle, warn her of the possibility of other enemies down here.

Case these assholes for weapons. Wait, why didn't they have guns? They could have just shot us, couldn't they? Hmm. Later, time for confusion later.

Weapons. The knife is good, a gun would be better, but whatever we can get our hands on.

Also, holy shit I thought Caius said he and his copies didn't make it as cage fighters because they weren't good enough? How good do they have to be, because his skills just wrecked these guys in a skinny little 20-something nurse's body.

Actually, that's a thought...even at the start of the comic Blondie was kind of a good fighter. Not a pro, it because of what she is? A sort of instinctual talent for destruction? It's something to keep in mind.

Weapons, then run to save Michelle. We can't lose her again.
Mochi 23rd Sep 2017, 1:06 AM edit delete reply
prophet wasn't expecting us to react like this.

prophet was expecting us to break, he expected losing michelle to ruin us. shatter us. instead, it just made us angry. in the end, when we were on him, we had no fear any more. there was nothing he could do. he could make us feel everyone die -- it just made us angrier, and angrier.

if you pay attention, i'm reasonably certain he died of fear. and he deserved it. he deserved it all.
PurpleKetchup 23rd Sep 2017, 1:18 AM edit delete reply
Oh wait. His power was not fear generation.

It was fear projection. Fuels yours through his.

In a way, that's a terrible power. Still deserved getting multistabbed, though. Asshats don't get to play the sorry life card.
Crestlinger 23rd Sep 2017, 1:24 AM edit delete reply
I do Believe that he got the Point.

Congratulate Red on a task well executed, loot the bodies, fill a syringe or two with 'prophet' and let Michelle know that Nimrod is still out and about.
