Since the door to the rest of the basement has a glass window, you have your raven hop up onto the push bar and peek through the glass.

The rest of the basement looks almost identical to how you remember it. If someone's tampered with the fingerprint lock, they didn't leave much visible evidence.

You also realize that you own a computer.

It's the car thing all over again.

You send the rat in your house around the premises, making sure everything's fine, before sending it to your room. Yup, the computer is still there.

well... everything looks fine here. the finger print lock is going to be a problem, but we might be able to break it, or the door. let's bring the raven out. then perhaps we can send someone to the house to pick up the computer after it gets dark.

i'm just imagining jane realizing this, popping out of her daze, smacking herself in the forehead and going into the rat. everyone else is very confused.

XD they might be used to it at this point, Jane just zones out super randomly at times and probably makes silly expressions once in a while lol

I blame it on the Blood Brain Barrier.

Oh, one thing about computers.
All computers have an ID associated with them, Multiple actually.

Even if we take this computer someplace else to use, the Hardware's ID will be linked to the original point of sale. Hence finding the owner, if not the location would be a matter of process.

Unless we have someone who can spoof both the hardware and software ID's taking it may not be the best idea.

So, in total a computer has a manufacturer ID on each component that is made (the Motherboard, Video Driver, Audio Card, CPU etc) and a Digital ID, which is made by the computer itself and stored for internet recognition.

Or... we could dig up a junk computer, and not have to worry about all that.
If I'm right the lowest levels should have a junkyard... well barring the radiation. If we go there, we might be able to get the parts needed to have a running computer.
We don't need a whole computer if we have the appropriate parts, and Fuse should be able to put them together, as well as identify their compatibility easily.

Everything nowadays already abstracts the hardware - the exact identity doesn't matter at all, hell not even the actual hardware - the drivers handle everything transparently and userspace is none the wiser. I don't expect that to change anytime soon.
Only the most 'Big Brother' of OSes would leave hardware serials accessible in userspace, and even less would let them accessible from an external scan.

For network stuff, it's less an 'ID' and more an obligatory destination point due to how routing works, but you can mostly hide that behind darknet nodes to slow tracking down.

We have a resident computer expert so no worries Baer. We don't know fully how it'll work on this world, but Fuse will know.

The point of getting our own computer is to avoid the Lower Tiers btw. Fuse said himself that procuring a computer on the cheap from the Lower or Mid tiers would not be fun, so we're just taking the more fun (and fast) route :P
Baeronius 20th Sep 2017, 8:08 PM edit delete reply
But this route we can't lean out a car window yelling "witness meeeee!" Or even decorate our car with some cattle skulls or spikey wheel collars.

But I guess it is safer. Technically.

All that spoofing and virtualization would do is create a digital layer on top of the data leaving to create the spoof.

Should something happen to disrupt the digital layer, everything defaults back to the physical layer, as it has to. A shock to the digital layer literally wipes everything, while the physical cannot be removed short of destroying the computer itself.

It doesn't matter how advanced the computer is, this kind of information layering would exist regardless of complexity.

Hence there are always ways of getting at the true hardware ID's

It's like a cake. the spoofing is the icing, the virtual ID is the fluffy chewy center, but the Hardware ID is the Plate itself, as It makes the spot where everything else sets up. But if someone else uses a knife, they're gonna hit the plate if they cut in the right direction.

Okay, but what exactly are we going to do with the computer anyway? Or did we just say it'd be cool to have one?

It'd probably be easier to get to Howler's computer, and as far as we know nobody knows that we know about it. We'd just have to pick the lock again.

chances are fuse can do more in the way of hacking with a computer than just his phone. having it would allow him to be at his full potential.
rufiangel 20th Sep 2017, 6:40 PM edit delete reply
It was mostly me bringing it up I think XD because Fuse is burnt and unlikely to join us for field trips until he gets skin grafts, he'd probably be happy to have a machine to do research and/or whatever fun hackery skills he has in the motel room while everyone else (or most of us anyway) is out. He can do a lot with his cellphone, of course, but a computer would be even better. Plus he might be able to help write another program to steal all the footage we need in one shot.

We aren't too sure about Howler's apartment yet... It looked safe outside but... Probably warrants another peek inside.

Jane is an adorable forgetful foo foo <3

Let's tell our friends the hospital seems empty (save for one odd thunk that... Could have been plumbing? Not sure) but discuss ways to bypass the fingerprint lock. Would there be another way besides bleeding into it and syncing?

Second up on Mochi on sending someone to nab the computer real quick after dark. Though I guess first ask Fuse if he needs something specific. He probably should be fine with ours though.
