You spend some time treating Fuse's burns.

"I look like a god damn mummy," he grumbles.

"We'll get you some new clothes," Michelle suggests. "Did your jacket make it out?"

"Yeah," he responds. "I took it off before I passed out, so the jacket's only a little burnt. I mean, aside from the sleeve, from the... last time I lit myself on fire."

"Y'should stop doin' that," Caius suggests.

"Yeah," Fuse responds dryly. "Thanks, I'll take that into consideration."

"It's just a matter of time, Caius," Michelle says. She gives an almost... sinister kind of smile. "Fuse got burnt, I had half my face blown off, Blondie lost an eye an' god knows what else... you're due."

Caius chuckles, crossing his arms. "I cut my hair off, that don't count?"

You order a pizza, and you all discuss the next step.

"Gesenai's gonna be pissed," Caius points out. "She ain't gonna know it was Carpenter's brain thing that put Mac in a coma. She's gonna think it was us."

"I'm sure that's what Carpenter wants," Fuse responds. "Like, exactly what he wants. All these scumbags are playing each other. They're stabbing each other in the backs while trying to stab us in the front. Prophet said the same thing, right? He's manipulating them, they're manipulating him, and now they're starting to trip over each others' feet."

"An' Thale's prob'ly in on the whole thing," Michelle says. "If Thale's whole circle banded together they could run the city."

"They do run the city," Fuse interjects.

"More than they do now, I mean," Michelle continues. "Think how much power Thale has that he's got all these people under his thumb. Mac was scared of him. Shirai needs Mac's help to deal with him. Prophet's gettin' played, and he might not even know Thale's involved. Carpenter and Hope are both eatin' crumbs from Macland, who's eatin' crumbs from Patton Thale. Thale's gotta keep all his underlings unstable just to keep 'em from eatin' him an' takin' his throne."

Fuse chuckles, just a little. "That's what the roaches were doing in Macland's mind... eating each others' bodies. That's what he thought of poor people."

"Macland thinks he's better, but he's in the same spot," Michelle states. "He's just been waitin' for Thale to slip up and do... whatever it is he thought Thale was gonna do. While steppin' over everybody else, while they try and step over him. These assholes coulda killed us by now, easy, if they weren't chasin' each other so hard."

"But then they could all turn on Thale," Fuse says, nodding. "And that's not what Thale wants. He's fighting a war on two fronts."

There's a brief pause before Caius speaks up.

"Hey... y'think Carpenter's on that Queen junk?"

A longer pause takes the room as everybody thinks about it.

"Carpenter's nuts," Fuse says bluntly, "but if I had to guess he's like Macland. Desperate enough to kneel, but too proud to kiss the ring. I don't even know if alien blood could control that crazy bastard."

"But..." Michelle points, trailing off a bit. "With everything else happenin', that's a good question. You think Thale knows what Carpenter did? You think Thale okay'd it? If Macland really did have a plan to shank Thale when this is all over with--"

"--then Thale might be cleaning house early, while letting everybody think it was us. Only Carpenter and Thale would know any better. That gets Gesenai off of Thale and onto us. It's not business anymore, it's revenge." Fuse exhales slowly. "Even if Thale didn't plan it that way, this works out in his favor way too well. Macland wouldn't take the drug. If Thale couldn't have him... we don't get him either. If we'd have died in Macland's mind, it would've just sweetened the deal."

"So either Carpenter decided on his own to off Mac to get to us..." Caius summarizes, "or Thale put him up to it. Not just to take a stab at us, but to get rid of a threat to his fucked up empire." Caius runs a hand over his head. "Geeeez. Carpenter's crazier than we thought, or tha man behind it all is straight up like, tha devil."

You all spend about an hour eating and resting. You discuss among yourselves a few possible applications of your powers--slowing or stopping the aging process, for example--but there's still a lot of aspects to it you think you'd need Dr. Finch to help with. You also bring up with Caius and Michelle the risk of syncing, especially involving a forced sync--that you and Fuse spent a little too much time synced.

Inventory check now that the extra goods are here and get some practice in on all fronts: fighting, powers, weaponry and first aid for everyone while Fuse heals up.

Another thing I'm rather concerned about is that the "Feds" are gonna assume we're responsible for killing Macland, too. This might be a big provocation for them, that we, the evil foreign alien, have killed a native human Earthling. It's such an easy narrative to fall into that they might not even consider who's really behind the mind-trap that did him in.
worthless 16th Sep 2017, 11:38 PM edit delete reply
I really don't think this "Feds" give a s*** about some random rich guy dying, I mean do they even know that we injected Mac? We just saw them at our house nothing more...right?
And unless they knew about the connection before his death I don't think its that rare to have some random rich person to randomly kick the bucket, either an unhappy servant killed him or was poisoned by one of his friends for being a "nuisance"
rufiangel 17th Sep 2017, 3:00 AM edit delete reply
I think they're already under the impression that Jane isn't actually Jane, but an evil alien bodysnatcher or something of the like. =v=;; Unfortunately.

also the fact its more coma and not death

Ask the others about the moral implications of going around town and sticking people with syringes of your blood, for the purpose of saving everybody from Thale doing basically the same thing, but more invasively.

Go stab some animals with some syringes of your blood.

Ask Red if it would be possible to train to become more able to control more than one thing at a time with the blood, without giving up necessary humanity. (If this has been covered, I've forgotten.)

See if it's possible to tell if people are lying when they're injected with your blood, and/or make them say a true statement about what they lied about. This would imply making them say something we don't know about, though.

You know...using syncing we can borrow memories and skills and stuff. Can we also GIVE memories? Could we show someone what we saw in Macland's mind, somehow?

Oh, that reminds me. I bet that reporter we saw has been on TV. Can we use a cleantex dose to try and suss out who she is, if we've seen her before? If not, we can try the "sharing memories" thing and see if someone else knows.

It was Elegance guards who beat her...not to imply anything nasty, but maybe Caius saw her around before she got disappeared?
Baeronius 17th Sep 2017, 12:00 AM edit delete reply
Wheeeell... that's technically what happened at the card game, we flopped memories between people.
So giving memories could be possible, but I think it requires a bit of synching, and it may be quite random.

Hey, I know what we could do. Fix our ears. I mean, hearing through our chest is cool and all, but we have ears there for a reason.

I wonder if we'll see that bouncer/bodyguard with the scar on his face again. Maybe he's TH. *drama sting*

I really love the dialogue in this update XD Why are they all such precious gems haha <3 it's so nice to finally get a breather after all of that, happy pizza times :D

(Also I burst out laughing when I saw Fuse, sorry Fuse XDDD but that's... lolol mummy-Fuse is made doubly funnier with the visor XDDD)

This update brought a lot of things back full circle; I'm pretty certain Thale purposefully engineered events so Macland would take himself out this way. Carpenter is most definitely deeper in Thale's pocket than Mac's. And it explains more about why no one's really quite managed to 'get us' yet. Though I still wonder what Macland meant when he yelled at Shirai that he had a 'plan'? Because he definitely didn't mean the force-sync that would destroy his brain. Hm.

I'm happy to see we have some priorities here, set by our characters. Dr. Finch and Fuse getting better first, then Thale. So now we need to focus on extracting Dr. Finch.

Ideally he'd wake up in time to give us some understanding of his situation. I don't know if they will just let him walk out and leave where they're at; if they did, that'd be AMAZING HAHA but uh, most likely they're going to want to interrogate him. Possibly experiment on him if they suspect he's got Jane's blood in him, which is possible to confirm because they performed surgery on him and have all the samples they might need to see whether he's got a dose of alien blood or not. (They might suspect it seeing that he actually survived the weaponised strep and tried to inject the agent lady with a syringe of Jane's blood, probably doesn't take too many geniuses to figure that potential connection out.) I'm very worried for him; the sooner we get him out, the better.

(It *is* possible we could head to a hospital to get our ears fixed and Fuse's skin grafted at this point, but I still am queasy about undergoing any surgery without Dr. Finch. He's the only one I trust because I am so super paranoid. But that could just be me, so. :P)

About that bunker... is it possible we could maybe blood syringe one of the drivers of the trucks that keep going in (and not coming out for a while)? It would give us the ability to perceive through them and see what the inside is like to an extent. This is just me thinking out loud and seeing what kind of resources we have to work with.

More thinking out loud: I suppose we could try contacting that number the agent lady gave us, and just figure out *exactly* what they want from Jane. Like, do they just want her to surrender herself? Or is there something they want specifically? I don't want to tip our hand too early, though, so I don't necessarily think this is the best idea. Hum.
Baeronius 17th Sep 2017, 3:07 AM edit delete reply
What if they have some kind of scanner at the entrance looking for the blood?
Then the driver thing would be... uh... sad.
rufiangel 17th Sep 2017, 4:16 AM edit delete reply
I don't think they could scan for Jane's blood from a superficial standpoint like that, though? Her blood is able to imitate whatever bloodstream it's in, after all.
AlphaDragon 17th Sep 2017, 11:04 AM edit delete reply
I think Rick is right here, early on we learned our blood imitated stuff. Including regular blood.
PurpleKetchup 17th Sep 2017, 2:59 AM edit delete reply
Ok, so instead of 4 factions (Thale&co, Prophet, Feds, Jane&co) the first one is actually split in tiny bits each trying to one up each other.

I don't think our current team will be able to sustain things much longer. As Michelle said, if they actually focused on killing you off you wouldn't last very long.
There's just too much imbalance right now. I'm still interested in befriending the one miss Fed we encountered, if only to have that tiny bit of extra goodwill out there.

If we only have half the feds wanting to dissect Jane, that's better than all of them. Plus they have the resources and logistics sorely needed to fight this through.
Kitty 17th Sep 2017, 2:24 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, even if we don't make her our *friend,* we can still hopefully make her a *not-enemy.* And it's good to have as many not-enemies as possible.

I really don't see how making a phone call could compromise us much anyways, as long as we use a burner phone, have Fuse do hackery spoofing things to it to make it harder to trace, and make the call from a neutral location (preferably while in the car so we can chuck the phone out the window and drive away if we need to).
rufiangel 17th Sep 2017, 3:02 AM edit delete reply
MM, just a question for clarification; if we use the cleantex skill, for example, we initially learnt it by syncing with Dr. Finch and Fuse. Does that mean every time we use faux-cleantex, we're syncing with them again, or have we learnt to do it off by heart without needing to sync?
Baeronius 17th Sep 2017, 3:09 AM edit delete reply
I think the reuse is a learned even from figuring out the "shape" of the medicine.
But I am prepared for more "soul-crushing truths.♥"
Mochi 17th Sep 2017, 5:41 AM edit delete reply
i think we can manage the cleantex thing without needing to be synced. we were synced with finch last time only because that was the only way we could communicate with him without the fed knowing.

michelle forgot to mention finch getting impaled, i bet he has some pretty impressive scarring from that. :P

i'm glad that everyone is still mostly in good spirits, aside from fuse (but who can blame him really). we could probably run out and get him something to wear, maybe even a new jacket, one with both sleeves! other than that i still think laying low for the rest of the day -- maybe even tomorrow -- would be smart.
rufiangel 17th Sep 2017, 7:41 AM edit delete reply
Oh gosh, you're right XD;; but I guess she may not have deigned to mention it since she's still worried for the doctor. ;v;

Laying low for the rest of the day sounds like a plan since we knew from the start of the day we should only pick one thing to focus on given the strain of either plan: go get Dr. Finch, or go in Mackey's head. Though I guess Jane should probably occasionally check in on her blood links just to see what they're up to.

I'm going to guess we may not get a chance to catch too long of a breather once we find out what's really going on with Dr. Finch, but let's see... (Pessimism: you're grimly satisfied when you're right, you're happy when you're wrong!)

P.S. Also second up on getting Fuse some clothes. -v-)/

So I'll start by saying I've been a silent observer, starting about the beginning of August and I love it so far! I also want to say I always think of this comic when this song plays.

MM, Mochi, Rufi... I have a question... Doesn't the drug Queen control people? If so doesn't there have to be someone pulling the strings?

If the above is correct, and it's a person in power, why would the factions be fighting? They could be "ordered" to get along, just like "don't tell you were injected" has a residual effect.
It doesn't benefit Thale really.

Who who does it benefit for the criminals to tear each other apart?
I suspect, and it would take some thought out moves to get the story there, but wouldn't that be in the feds best interest?
Mochi 17th Sep 2017, 11:20 AM edit delete reply
queen is a mind control drug that mimics the properties of our blood, yes, and there is a queen pulling the strings (or king, in this case). however, as we saw with macland, not everyone involved in this plot is under thale's control. macland refused to take the drug because he valued his privacy. i'm willing yo bet the other big players, like shirai and carpenter, also refused the drug. this allows them to keep their independence and, as such, they are free to plot against thale as much as their shrivelled, black hearts desire.
Mochi 17th Sep 2017, 11:47 AM edit delete reply
also thale, at this point, probably has so many people under his control that it would take exorbitant amounts of time and energy to micromanage all of his minions, especially when there's a whole drugged out cult in the lower tiers who probably throw queen around like candy at a kid's birthday party. it's got to be like the worst real-time strategy game in history. he's probbly lucky he has as good a handle on the situation as he does, if i'm honest.
rufiangel 17th Sep 2017, 11:45 AM edit delete reply
Ya, what Mochi said. That's prolly why Thale keeps trying to get Macland to take the drug repeatedly on this page. But when your pawns (who think they're Kings) aren't willing to be under your thumb so easily, snuffing them out and framing Jane for it seems like a pretty good plan. u_u
