You step through the door to purgatory.

You hear a voice.

There's something else in what it speaks. You can't... quite make it out, but something reverberates beneath its tone.

It's distant.

Your red, screaming, in the background.

ruh roh!

It occurs to me there are things that could scare an infantile, sheltered Red who is half human. This would appear to be one of them.

Perhaps she's scared for us.
Varil1024 12th Sep 2017, 10:17 PM edit delete reply
Run Scoob! be honest I'd like to take the fight to this thing somehow...but how? If it's hurting our red then this thing is attacking our very nature. Or more specifically, our mom's nature.

But not us? Does that mean it is less capable of hurting a human mind, somehow? Or is it just because it wanted to take the time to mock us while it attacked our red?

Can we...assert dominance somehow?
Kitty 12th Sep 2017, 10:33 PM edit delete reply
I do like the idea of asserting dominance. Even if it's just bluster. We need to come into ourselves as an utter badass if we're gonna survive the badass-worthy level of bullshit that the world is throwing at us, after all :P

"Yes we are. I'm supposed to be anywhere we want to be. Now step out of my way, because I want in that door over there."

(Maybe we should check in with our red real quick to make sure that doing that won't, like, kill her tho >_>)
Mochi 12th Sep 2017, 10:48 PM edit delete reply
this brings up the point of whether or not we could just... command macland to stop resisting us. though i doubt that'll work with us already inside his head.
rufiangel 12th Sep 2017, 10:58 PM edit delete reply
Given our experience with Michelle, I think we can assuredly say commanding Mackey to stop resisting us would not work. ;v; We definitely tried that with Michelle, to no avail.
Mochi 12th Sep 2017, 10:22 PM edit delete reply
okay seriously though, can we... can we run for it? can we even get through the divide in the panels to get to the door? also, why is red screaming and how is this able to attack her if that's what is going on here? red is our blood, she's a manifestation of our blood, she doesn't really... exist? it doesn't make sense that she'd be in actual danger.
WalkerOfSorrow 12th Sep 2017, 10:26 PM edit delete reply
When we left Michelle's mind, there was a straight shot. No matter how unpleasant, the spiders could not stop us. I don't think MM has made an error by framing the picture in two halves. (If it was somehow an error, I would appreciate knowing, glorious author.)

So let's think quickly. If this is not a mistake, and is how he intended to portray this: why? What does it mean?
Mochi 12th Sep 2017, 10:33 PM edit delete reply
why.... why would it be a mistake? clearly there's a divide, like... it's very obviously there. chances are we can't get through the divide. my asking if we could was kind of rhetorical.

regardless red said he can't trap us here. there's a way out, we just have to find it.

What has the grey margin ever meant?
Mochi 12th Sep 2017, 10:41 PM edit delete reply
historically in the visual medium of comic books gutters represent a divide between scenes or actions in panels.

which is what i'm assuming they continue to mean in this, a comic.
WalkerOfSorrow 12th Sep 2017, 11:36 PM edit delete reply
You're probably not going to see this Mochi, but I would just like to say, in context of what came after this page: ASSUMPTION WRONG. COMIC IS NOT COMIC.

the grey margin is nothing. it is Nothing.
rufiangel 12th Sep 2017, 11:09 PM edit delete reply
In the mindscape of Michelle's head, the Red spoke to us as though she were talking right into our ear. ("You hear Red whispering, as though she were right at your ear.") This seems to imply that actually, in mindscapes, our Red can be closer to us than usual; possibly because her plane of existence is mostly based within another dimension (hence why we have to 'externalise' her sometimes into our plane), and mindscapes are closer to that plane of existence than our real world.

Therefore in this particular case, there appears to be more distance or interference and it's hampering our connection with Red significantly and most likely deliberately. The fact we can hear it screaming in the distance probably means there's another layer of mindscape here that we can't see or sense that's overlapping this one, which is where the memetic defenses may have been primarily installed.

There's a possibility if we really try, we can actually merge the two together, though in doing so we'll have to brace ourselves because it means we'll see what our Red is seeing. Doing so might actually link up the grey divide.

This brings me to a horrible idea, that we accidentally brought Fuse onto THAT layer of mindscape instead of the one we went into, but uh, let's think about that later because it's probably more likely Fuse just didn't join us in this. Right? Right. :'D

If we brought him in here, we need to go out with him, too! Looks like we really do have to explore, at least to make certain he isn't here.
rufiangel 12th Sep 2017, 10:22 PM edit delete reply
Calm down, Red!

If we can't get our red to calm down, is it possible to just step back out again and connect with our red to ask what's wrong?

Otherwise, we need to just grit our teeth and remind ourselves that we're bigger than whatever's in here and bulldoze through this. I mean, not sure if we have alternatives here. That monster silhouette doesn't look all that tangible.
WalkerOfSorrow 12th Sep 2017, 10:34 PM edit delete reply
I recommend we bleed on the knife and throw it straight at the exit.

A) It goes through, and somehow counts as us exiting. We wake up; nightmare over.

or B) It doesn't count as us exiting, but is uninterrupted by the monster and/or the weird gulf. We should be clear to go.

or C) It is interrupted by the gulf, but not the monster, and we learn something about the gulf.

or D) It is interrupted by the monster, and we learn something about the monster.

rufiangel 12th Sep 2017, 10:57 PM edit delete reply
That knife is the only weapon we have, so using it as a projectile and potentially losing it seems like a huge risk to me :'D we could always stab at it though?
Crestlinger 12th Sep 2017, 10:42 PM edit delete reply
Time to remember that kitten magazine and calm that thing down.
rufiangel 12th Sep 2017, 10:59 PM edit delete reply
Random idea. What if we pushed the 24k Mackey statue ahead of us like some kind of shield? XD;
Macheman7 12th Sep 2017, 11:04 PM edit delete reply
This. This is what we want to do.
Macheman7 12th Sep 2017, 11:02 PM edit delete reply
Maybe there's a divide in the panels...
Because we don't want to see what's there.
A mental block of some sort.
Take off a shoe and throw it towards the 'exit', then stand in the door to the starting room. Run if the almost-there thing follows us or reacts, keep the knife in hand.
We can't be physically harmed by what happens to us here, but mentally...
And besides, have we learned everything we wanted to learn yet?
Macland is a backstabbing asshole, but we knew that already. We need to obtain new info, or this will have just been a dangerous waste of time.

I'm really surprised no one mentioned the creature shadow before the page turned.
