Morgenstern
You ask your mother's red about controlling your abilities better--you tell it that you tried to regenerate part of your shoulder, but it turned out all weird (and almost turned out much weirder).

"Be aware that you are operating of two minds. Have you ever tried to bite your own thumb off? A human brain does its best to prohibit it, and will override your conscious decision with restraint of the body. You think with the brain, and with the blood. It is the blood that lets you manipulate your biology, but the blood does not want to be shaped like a small human person. It wants to be free. It wants you to be larger, and without shape.

You can get better, with practice, at making your body do what you want... but it may never be perfect. The human shape is very rigid, and specific, with certain restrictions and guidelines to its composition. I find it very boring, but your mother often lamented that her human disguise was not quite right."

You ask if it might be possible to use your blood to vaccinate your allies against streptococcus.

"What is... vaccination?"

You describe that you want to make them immune to the bacteria.

"A difficult task, perhaps. One of the limits of the human entity is that it is susceptible to such ailments. I sometimes worried that your mother's small human shape would leave her vulnerable to a virus or a parasite or a bacterium. Forcing the shape to work requires playing by its rules. There are many above the realm of disease, but they are not humans."

You ask the red if it's aware of anything on the planet that was hunting aliens.

"Zone Fifty. As their curiosity rose, their empathy fell. It is not a good imbalance of human emotions. That is how your mother met your father, in fact--he once was employed by Zone Fifty. Their encounter was something of an accident, as it was explained to me."

You were told by Grizwald that Zone Fifty shut down about a hundred years ago. You ask the red about that.

"Yes. I have heard nothing of them in at least a century."

...But that would mean your dad was over 100 years old. He did not look over 100 years old.

"Your mother may have cheated at the human rules. Only a little."

You ask if there's a way to not exhaust yourself--some of the things you've been doing are very tiring.

"Do not be a human. As I understand it, it is in their nature to wear out."

You also ask if your mother had any enemies--not on this planet, but outside it. Big, Mom-sized enemies.

"Of course. Your mother's... species? That is not an appropriate word. Other facets of that which bears a red lack an innate fondness for one another. As oil and water are both fluid, but cannot mix. As love and hate are both emotions of your human brain, but do not blend. The others of the thing your mother was fought at any encounter. There were few left in the cosmos, as far as she knew--perhaps she was the last, even.

Many ages ago, before she examined this planet more closely, she tore one of the others of her kind apart. She strung their pieces across the black of space, dragged the crumbs of them between the stars. Your mother was also made unwhole, for a time, but she recovered once the battle was won. Their struggle concluded over the fourth planet from your sun.

The other knew for your parent, what you may equate to hatred... a thing your mother almost shared in turn. But, just as an ant can hardly be said to know a human's "joy," what was between them was beyond any capacity for your adorable brain to feel as hate. There is no word for their desire to see each other cease to be. It was too profound, too vast, for language. Neither would have ever known a semblance of peace while the opposite existed."

THAT'S WHY THERE WAS BLOOD ON MARS! THAT'S WHY THEY FOUND BLOOD THERE! the fourth planet from the sun, it's because mom tore another of her kind to shreds over mars! holy crap. ask how mom had dad live to be over 100. we can use that, maybe. we can extend michelle's life, and caius too, because he'll have the same deal as her. also, there's a possibility that there's some of that original blood from mars around and that's why this stupid cult is trying to kill us... i hope not, but we need to remember that.

So those without form are capable of actions, but their actions are not measured, nor focused. So without the ability to communicate or negotiate, the only action they had near each other was conflict.

Mom's Red just told us before she came to earth she acted on instincts and didn't really think much of it. Or possibly think at all.

Once she was Humanized she began to see order? As the form begets the rules... So she learned to think and focus in an ordered fashion, as well as to communicate, and understand those around her that were not herself?

Hmm.

I've read a few stories about creatures that believed themselves to be "ascended" of mind but basically looked closer in organization to a pool of amoeba.
For example, one group's mental capacity went so far "outward" that they simply became observers of their universe, literally sitting there, knowing all, but doing nothing. Their machinery had to take care of them and do everything for them. So they had no ability to act, regardless of how much knowledge they had. To them, this state of "being a lump" was ascension.

Basically, their "Ascension" was our species "Regression".

No idea if there are any parallels, or if the concept of "far superior" is something of a subject bias, because Mom's Red, was indeed a part of Mom, so glorifying oneself doesn't seem like that far of a stretch.

The Mars red blood-hates mom and Jane by proxy, even after a century.
This explains the Queen controller's irrational overreaction. It's poorly imitated bioprinted blood, but it poorly-imitated-hates her on a molecular level.
Looks like this planet ain't big enough for two reds.

If the feds are using products developped out of the old Martian blood, they'll also try to destroy Jane. We can only trust non-exposed people (and her own thralls).
I hope miss Fed is just a robot. Nice, gentle robot immune to diseases, and uninterested in our immediate demise.

Anyway, same thing as last time. Learn more from mom's Red. Practice staying human but fixing their weaknesses.
Wait for Macland to pass out.
Hope enough feds are neutral and willing to listen.

Aghhh so many new revelations in this update!! @_@

I could have guessed that would be the case regarding our body, but it's good to know it does get a bit better with practice. We'll get... somewhere. Even our ma had laments on her human form not being 'quite right'. Though being half-human, we got a one(half)-up on her there, I guess. Sucks about not being able to vaccinate our pals that easily though.

'As their curiosity rose, their empathy fell.' Well, looks like our dad's empathy went the other direction XD man, I love this story. Okay, dad, you were over a 100 years old. WELL THEN. That does certainly add a lot more to this family than we ever realised XD;;; gosh darn. Not just any stock trader, were you, pa?

That said, this does mean that it's highly likely that the 'Fed' lady is actually from Zone Fifty, or a new faction derived from Zone Fifty's original intentions. I still get 'wants to dissect Jane' vibes from this business. They may believe they're protecting the city from hazardous aliens and justify their views that way, but we can't just bend over and take it.

By the way, the way Jane's blood reacts to the bio-printed Mars imitation blood makes a LOT of sense now. If we come across the real thing, it's going to be REALLY dramatic.

Also, whoever TH is, is likely projecting that beyond-human-comprehension-hatred at Jane because of the relationship between the prior owner of the Mars blood versus Jane's mother. That connects the dots more, so it's not just Jane being an anomaly that's grating at TH - it's also this otherworldly connection that perhaps even TH is not fully aware of.

Could we ask more about how ma and pa met? An 'accident'? 'ㅅ'

Also, still waiting for that motherly advice, plx XD

Our red views itself as a human form. So we know it feels for the path of humanity, quite possibly it may want to "stretch it's legs" every now and then. But self-image often implies how one feels comfortable.

Our Red may feel comfortable as being a human. *shrug*
So that probably means Red would like to fix our body, but is nervously unsure of how to go about doing so.
PurpleKetchup 8th Sep 2017, 12:19 AM edit delete reply
Slight caution there - Jane's mindscape can distort how some things look (#200).
Red may look human in there, but she very well may look like #163 or worse if Jane starts expressing too much of her in reality.

She's got a lot more red than what they got for the Lasker fiasco. Enough to drink/destroy earth if she drops too far.

Yes, but a function of the Human body is known as Homeostasis.
It's basically a rejection of too much change that enacts upon the cellular level of the body. If she was really born half human, she has this trait in her cells too.

We may be able to fold as well, but the human aspect gives us a "default shape".
rufiangel 8th Sep 2017, 12:38 AM edit delete reply
rufiangel
Actually, that's debatable. The 'red' thing is totally beyond human understanding (lol) but here's how I've been understanding it.

The red constructs itself based on ideas and blueprints that come from us. The red is a song that we sing, and a lesson that we teach. The reasons our red didn't quite appear so human before, was because we didn't know what our real identity was. We feared the monster we were seeming to be, and that fear was manifested in our interactions with our red, and our mighty rejection of it. Our red wanted to frighten us, because it wanted to break out of the human mold. But ultimately, our red is also of us. It doesn't view itself as human, but when we found out properly about what we were and what a 'red' even was, we projected that new blueprint in reflection of who *we* really believe we are: human, deep down. The room we grew up in, as a normal human girl, is the backdrop to our red. Our red appears *like* a human, but note that she has the bloody nurse uniform we woke up in at the start of the chapter, when our humanity had fractured and we realised our alien being. Our red is represented in a bandaged, bloodied human body.

Our red laments human fragility to huge degree. It appears human, only because we have learnt to sing our song that way. But it is by no way human, and addresses us constantly in a manner that makes it clear that Jane is the one who is attached to being human, not so much as our red. But our red is considerate of this, and respects it, even if it finds it bemusing or limiting.

Jane sets new ground rules in regards to this whole thing because she's not fully alien, she's also part-human. But I wouldn't say that her red is comfortable with being human. I don't know if we should ever expect it to be. But it is, at least, willing to accept that we want to be human. And it's trying pretty hard already to go along with it. So I don't think the Red is capable of fixing us properly, but hasn't been doing so out of nervousness.

Also, what PurpleKetchup said; even our red has explicitly explained that every time we pull material out of the red to externalise, we'll always struggle to get it looking the same way we envision it in our head.

So you're saying that our form is heavily malleable, including the feeling of self, and whole?

And in essence, we may change one day so that we no longer care about our friends, and consider eating or killing them?
Because our self is not stable?

Uh... well... that is kind of sobering.

... Or I may be over-reading what you're saying but eh. Or maybe the eating bit came from staring at your avatar too long.

rufiangel
Hm, no, I don't think I said that our form is heavily malleable, nor the feeling of self. Nor did I say that we may change one day so we no longer care about our friends because our self is not stable.

I said that we struggled with our red at first because we didn't actually know what it was, and it was frightening to us. Even MM stated flat out that our red was trying to frighten us at the time. You have to consider *why* it did at the time, why it is now *not* doing that.

We've stabilised our relationship with our red, and we've concretely chosen the human path and have shown in every choice we've made so far that we care about our friends, and human life in general.

But that doesn't mean our 'red' is comfortable with being human, nor is it nervous about expressing itself. If anything, *we* are nervous about externalising our red. Our red always tells us that we 'might not like the results' when we ask if we should try.

I'm not saying our 'red' is callous. Our red actually already told us it does NOT want our friends to die. It's just that our red knows that we could take another path, one where we shed our humanity, the easier path in essence. One where we just ditch everything that makes us human, so we don't have to care. So we don't have to have human feelings that hurt so much when we lose someone important. But we won out in choosing the other path, and our red is going along with it, knowing it's the harder path.

What I'm really getting at, is that the human form is never going to be something the red fully incorporates because it's not human. If you read the answer our mom's red gives about why it's hard for us to control the regen, it's because our blood is alien by nature. That's not something we can ever change. The human side comes from Jane. She curbs the red.

(Again disclaimer that I am only saying what I think is the case and only MM knows what the real deal is XD)

Also, my avatar eats all the things nom nom nom XD

Ah! The art made my brain tanget to Kim Possible. Specifically Shego. Hmm.
And Good morning!

Okay, now my brain is working, here's a better concept of what I... may... have been trying to say last night.

We are half human half Blood, or whatever the lineage is.
Therefore our Blood may not feel comfortable being fully human,
but it ALSO won't feel comfortable being fully Blood, cause we're half and half. Like milk. Kinda. Well actually now that I think about it, we really are like milk cause we get spread into everything.

If we could find a medium for the two without scaring our friends, or freaking out the public, that would probably be great.
I mean... Mom's Red is the ship, so does that mean our Red wants to frollick with the crew? Or does it want to sit back inside and just let things be? Or possibly does it want to alter itself, but stay connected inside?
WalkerOfSorrow 8th Sep 2017, 12:20 AM edit delete reply
I'd like it if we told Mom's Red something to this effect: "My Mom wanted me to live a normal human life. She wanted me to be happy. But I've fallen, I've hurt myself. What I need right now is Mom to hold me, make me feel better, and tell me to get up and try again. Can you do that for our blood? Make the struggle and pain go away just for a little bit, so we can get up and try again?"

I also feel the need to tell you guys: Enyo was a goddess of war in Greek mythology. She is the mother of Enyalius the war god, and aunt of Phobos (Fear) and Deimos (Dread). She was known variably as the companion, sister, wife, or sometimes mother of Ares. Also called Mars.
PurpleKetchup 8th Sep 2017, 12:22 AM edit delete reply

Varil 8th Sep 2017, 8:30 AM edit delete reply
What I'm curious about is if there's a middle ground. Something where we can be more without giving up our humanity. It's a risky road to consider, already we've almost slipped once or twice and something like that would probably be walking the line even more.

But...can this fight be won with human strength and limits? Finch could be in grave danger, and we have so many enemies. But...can we grow stronger without sacrificing our ability to care? If we lose what our mother gave us, that basic humanity she was willing to die for, then there's no point to any of this.

I'm just spinning my wheels a bit here, no suggestions. Just...wondering where we go from here.
rufiangel 8th Sep 2017, 8:34 AM edit delete reply
rufiangel
Well, spinning my wheels here too, I think that we're actually doing this at the right pace right now. Ever since we woke up in that hospital, we've been building up a compendium of new skills and exploring more and more potential as the days go by. We just need to take this one skill at a time.

I think one of the most useful skills we can start trying to practise next is our blood portalling. Because technically, if we figure out how it works and know where Dr. Finch is at, we could just... portal in, grab him, and portal back out. -v-;; I know that would be TOO convenient but hey, why not?

Oh. Maybe we should ask mom's red about how blood teleportation works specifically. Practising with the amount of blood it takes might be a bit hazardous to our health. XD; If mom's red could provide the parameters to that, it could be jolly helpful.
Varil 8th Sep 2017, 9:08 AM edit delete reply
That's a good idea.

Come to think of it, when we were describing what happened using level, we slid into our blood...but did we travel through it, or just use it to facilitate the journey? Remember, everything was red! We know mom's Red is kind of...extra-dimensional. It can "fold into itself" and probably doesn't treat distance the way we do.

Can we use our Red to travel? Does it require blood to do? Can we take other people through our Red? We took our clothes, after all. We should ask mom's Red all this stuff, and maybe our own too.
rufiangel 8th Sep 2017, 10:06 AM edit delete reply
rufiangel
I think you mean cleantex XD I went back and read it again, aaaand

"You slid into your own blood

everything was red

you moved from the body bag back to your bed, at home, your body rising from the bloodstains in the sheets."

We basically need a crap load of blood to do it I think XD;;;; and I realise we need a pool of blood to come out of. (I actually misunderstood this whole thing until now, thanks for making me re-read that. I thought we wilfully teleported back home but reading it, I realise we sweat blood out into the sheets *first*, and THEN came right back out the body bag full of blood, through that.) Though that could be arranged one way or another, creatively speaking, I think... *rubs chin thoughtfully* I mean, for example, if the Feds took the body bag, that might still be rife with our blood enough to come out of, if we use the bloody sheets at home as our entry. Or if we locate any samples of our blood they took from Dr. Finch's lab and break them loose so they pool onto the floor, again, we could try to portal through it using the bloody sheets as an entry point. Hum. *more chin rubbing here*

But yes, I think we did it the way you're theorising, through the dimensional pocket our blood powers afford. I'm vaguely recalling this was actually talked about before but I can't pinpoint the moment this was mentioned.

It's worth asking if it's possible to bring someone with us through teleporting. Because that would definitely add a lot of options for us. -v-

You can check the 'Protagonist Origins' in the fan page for more details (under 'Plottery') but basically, it's not 100% clear - here's what we know.

Mom chose us over forever, meaning her choice somehow limited her lifespan. We know she grew sick and didn't see a doctor, and died. But as to exactly why she grew sick we don't know - only that it was caused either directly or indirectly by her choice to remain with Jane and her father. Jane's father was apparently mugged. He gave the muggers his money but they shot him anyway.

But of course, all these details could be subject to change and have more light shed on them, now that we actually know more. Like, how old Jane's dad *really* was, and that he was actually a part of Zone Fifty. This is all startling revelatory news and I'm excited to learn more -v-)/
AlphaDragon 8th Sep 2017, 9:58 AM edit delete reply
Ok, I'll buy Dad could have died from mugging... if Mom wasn't paying attention... since we know how to slow blood loss we can assume she probably did to.
IF (And this is a big IF in my mind) mom got sick and died... What made her sick? Because is it is bad enough to hurt her like that we need to plan for it.
rufiangel 8th Sep 2017, 10:19 AM edit delete reply
rufiangel
According to Jane's memories, Mom died first, and then Dad not very long after. (I'm pretty darn sure if the Dad had been shot while Jane's Mom was around, he sure as heck wouldn't have died - at least, not without a ton of effort on Jane's Mom's part to keep him alive - and whoever shot him would have been pulverised :'D)
Varil 8th Sep 2017, 10:42 AM edit delete reply
Knowing what we know now, it is definitely SUPER suspicious that Mom bit it to so weird...disease? Despite being some immortal super thing. Yeah, I know she'd purposefully limited herself somewhat, but Dad's apparent age makes it clear she wasn't playing entirely by the rules of humanity.

*We* just fixed some really bad bio-attack on the fly on our first try, and we aren't half as capable as Mom probably was even at her weakest.

My current theory is that one of the many factions aligned against us killed Mom somehow, then offed Dad shortly after.

The real question here is motive. What happened to Mom's body? Was she buried? Cremated? Dad may have been killed for knowing things.
PurpleKetchup 8th Sep 2017, 2:10 PM edit delete reply
One thing - Jane's a half-human nurse, educated in human diseases and biology for several years.
Her mother was an eldritch metadimensional extraterrestrial and her father was a (probably ex-)black ops agent.
There's a good chance Jane can just do more about a healthy human body than her mother did.

After all, she contained her nature to live with humans. Maybe she made some stuff wrong. Bad immunity, or weak to some specific syndrome. Maybe missing some crucial part of the puzzle that's not too obvious from the outside.
Hell, the differences were obvious - she laid an egg to have Jane. Assuming she's currently in her 20s, it took her parents a whoppy 70+ years to reach a point where they could conceive together. Surely there were other parts her mom got imperfect, plus she was getting kinda old for her new body, all things considered.
Maybe she didn't expect so many failings in humans. Anyway - she didn't exactly know how to fix herself and remain human at the same time. It was a matter of priority, and she chose death instead of lifting the veil.

Jane started out with a firmly established humanity from her father's genes, which gave a model for the other half to follow. Red remained dormant and let the human DNA dictate correct growth and behaviour.
As a result I think Jane is much more able to deal with all the earth-based bullshit that an alien has no idea about. On the other hand she probably won't grasp the alien concepts she needs to control her appearance or teleport or actual immortality or all sorts of mom-stuff.

That's fine.
