You input the number 0000. The locker does not open.

You take the lighter and cigarettes from the other, open locker, and you head back to the toy store. Though it's not much, the lighter's flame is better than nothing; you slowly, cautiously wander through the dark section of the toy store. You wander for a great while--the toy store seems to stretch on forever, though it may just feel that way because you're walking so slowly.

The lights suddenly come on. You stand at what appears to be the front of the toy store. More notably, Michelle and Vasquez are here... sort of. Their bodies are semi transparent, their images flickering, as though they were ghosts.

"I was lookin' all over for you, Michelle! The hell you want in a toy store?"

Michelle holds up a small, round device. "It's, uh, a digital pet. You can feed 'em, and play games with 'em and stuff. I figured since, y'know, I can't get a real pet--"

"It's a toy." Vasquez says flatly. "For kids. Like, children. I know you're young, but you got like... what, decades of experience plugged into that thick skull. You shouldn't be actin' like no kid, Michelle, you're an adult. Right?"

"Yeah," Michelle replies, "I am an adult. An' I'm gonna spend my adult money on this digital bird." Michelle lays the device on the counter, and begins fishing the money out of her pocket.

"You're wastin' your money," says Vasquez, taking a puff of his cigarette.

Michelle just shakes her head. "Nah. I'm gonna love my fake bird. I ain't gotta justify it either. I'm gonna name it an' shit," she adds, almost purely to spite Vasquez. "Like it was my own child. You're gonna wish you had a digital bird."

Michelle and Vasquez slowly fade from sight.

Varil 4th Sep 2017, 5:06 AM edit delete reply She couldn't own a pet, but was free to buy whatever? Was the pet thing a rule from Vasquez or something else?

In any case, I wonder if we should try putting Michelle in charge of the care of one of our animals or something? Like One of the ravens?

Anyway, did the device fade away or is it still there? If it's there let's investigate it. Also, check the counter and register. We don't need dream money anymore but there might be something useful.

It could just be that under her line of work, it was difficult for her to take care of a pet.

But it's also possible that Vasquez was just a massive a-hole. He forced Michelle to quit smoking, but he smoked himself with his fancy-pants lighter. That kind of double-standard shows already that he might have put all kinds of restrictions on her lifestyle in order to suit his needs. She was like his property since he 'bought her at a discount' and said he didn't 'pay her to think', he just wanted her to do whatever he said.

He may not have been able to control what she spent her money on, but he sure had relish here jeering at her and trying to make her feel stupid about it. Which in a way is influence enough in itself; look at the way Michelle says 'It's, uh, a digital pet' with hesitation from the get go. She has to say 'I ain't gotta justify it either' quite forcefully at the end there in order to go through with it, but I don't know if she felt truly free from his barbs. ~_~

... This comic makes me feel all the feels MM. All. The. Feels.

I'm kind of super glad 0000 didn't work XD;;;;

Okay, moving on. Like Varil says, let's check the device if it's still there.

(Michelle, you are the most adorable babu and I also second giving her charge of a birb later XD)

As I wonder where this is all leading to, I just sense something incredibly sad is impending. My heart. :'D
