It is rather late into the night, and you are all quite exhausted.

You all go to sleep.

At about 1:00 am, you discover that you can perceive through people even while you're asleep.

"Psst," Fuse whispers. "Anybody still awake?"

"Yeah," responds Michelle. "I don't trust the new guy around Blondie. Not while she's sleepin'."

Caius mutters, half asleep. "Blondie? Who the hell is Blondie?"

Fuse breathes out, not quite laughing. "The brunette on the couch."

There's a pause, Caius wrinkling his face as he tries to solve an unsolvable puzzle. He moves on without questioning it. "What are you scared o' me doin'? I'm lab meat. We're all gay."

There's a long, awkward silence before Michelle responds. "That's NOT... necessarily true."

"Is too," Caius counters flatly. "They give us the gay gene, 'cuz they don't want us breedin'."

Fuse sits up a little, looking back at Caius. "Dr. Finch isn't here to back me up on this, but I don't think that science holds up. It sounds like bad science."

Caius gives a big shrug. "You find me straight lab meat, I'll admit I was wrong. I ain't met none yet, though."

A longer silence sweeps the room before Fuse speaks up again.

"What are you guys afraid of?"

"...What?," Michelle asks.

Caius takes it a step further. "What kinda goofy question is that?"

"I was thinking about it... after the warehouse." Fuse turns, staring at the ceiling. "Prophet made Michelle hallucinate her fear. Maybe her biggest fear."

"You don't know that," Michelle throws in. "Maybe Prophet just has the power to summon spiders."

Caius gives a big shrug.

Fuse fights back a grin. "You screamed... like I have never heard a tube cop scream. There's no way you can convince me you're not terrified of spiders. What would be the odds that Prophet just happens to have radioactive spider powers? Dude makes you see whatever you're afraid of. It's the only thing that makes sense."

There's a slight pause before Michelle speaks up again. "Hey, Caius, I feel like you would know. Do all tube cops have the scared of spiders gene?"

Caius smirks, rolling his eyes a little. "Look, I'ma be real honest with ya--I've never seen a spider. If I did, though, I feel like I could kick its ass. And don't say tube cop, I ain't never been no stinkin' cop."

"But you were supposed to be. Right?," Michelle asks.

"Nah," says Caius. "Cage fighter."

Both Fuse and Michelle start laughing. Fuse is the first to calm down enough to continue the conversation. "No way. I am... totally calling you on that one."

Caius turns a little, trying to glance at Fuse. "It's true! I ain't messin' with ya. Our first line was s'posed to be MMA guys, they wanted pro level cage fighters. First couple of us they sent out kinda sucked at it, so they hocked the rest of us off. Gesenai ended up buyin' our whole line of contracts at a discount--shoved guns in our hands and turned us into bouncers."

"I guess that explains the attitude," Michelle states. "I mean, between that and workin' for guys like Macland."

"No joke," Caius adds, seemingly unphased by the remark about his attitude. "You think I'm a jerk, you shoulda met some o' tha fightball goons they was brewin'. Those guys... yeesh. They shoulda salted that whole line."

Fuse, in a sleepy haze, suddenly remembers what he was talking about.

"Guys, what are you afraid of?"

"Spiders. Okay? You got me," says Michelle. "I'm afraid of spiders. Why are we talkin' about this?"

"If you had known," Fuse begins, "that Prophet could make you see spiders... would you still have been scared of the spiders? Like, if you knew they weren't real, instead of them just... like... ambushing you out of nowhere."

Michelle takes a second to think about it. "I mean, I'd still be freaked out... but yeah, if I knew they weren't real, I prob'ly woulda powered through it."

"I'm afraid of losing control." Fuse says it almost abruptly, drawing a silence out of the other two. He goes on. "I used to burn myself all the time as a kid. Start fires on accident. I still... I still have nightmares, where my whole body just... combusts. Like... it's a thing that could really happen, but if we're going to face Prophet again... I need to be ready for that. I know he's going to hit me with that. I need to be ready to just... tell myself it's not happening. Not with Prophet in the room."

"I ain't afraid of nothin'," Caius says outright. "Not a darn thing."

"Darn?," laughs Michelle. "Did you just say a darn thing?"

"Theydidn'tlemmecussatwork," blurts Caius. "I got used to not cussin'. Dammit."

"What do you think Blondie's afraid of?," Fuse finally asks.

"Nothin'," says Michelle. "Maybe scared of the rest of us losers dyin'. She came back from the dead an' regrew a chunk of her body already. She drugs people with her mind. Scary stuff is scared of her. She don't get scared."

"Prophet..." Caius gives a grim chuckle. "Prophet sounded like some kinda robot nightmare. An' that big bastard wit 'em... my whole head fit in his hand. I could feel it. Just his hand on my head, that freak coulda popped my head like a zit. Squeezed me out like a tube o' toothpaste. Soon as Prophet figured out he wasn't talkin' to me, though... you'da thought he crapped himself. All that talk was gone. Bravado... right out tha window. He was nervous.

One girl, talkin' through me, tied to a steel beam. Wit' a blindfold on, even. Prophet was scared of that. I don't think she's the devil... I think the devil would stay the fuck outta this."

"Mercy... or fear," mumbles Michelle.

"What?," Fuse asks, starting to drift off to sleep.

"S'what Prophet said," Michelle clarifies. "When I tried to let him go... he asked if it was mercy or fear, that I was lettin' him walk. He had me dead to rights with that spider thing... he coulda made his buddy kill me, easy. Prophet prob'ly coulda snatched the gun outta my hands if he wanted. But he just... scared me, and walked out. Left me there. Did he do it outta mercy, or fear...?"

Silence finally takes the room.

That is a good question what is Jane afraid of except losing her friends hmmm I wonder and the all lab meats being gay that caught me off guard like I just didn't expect that, this is just very interesting
rufiangel 30th Aug 2017, 7:57 AM edit delete reply
From what I can recall of all the scenes with the red, Jane is afraid of losing her friends, and she's also afraid of turning into an uncontrollable monster outright. The regeneration scene also highlights this, when she starts to panic because she's becoming less human. The reality of her dual nature is still something she's growing accustomed to, and is probably still wont to overwhelm her if she doesn't put in effort to keep it all straight in her head. Michelle's right that scary stuff is scared of Jane, but I think even Jane is scared by the fact that she's that scary. XD; Weirdly enough.

Another thing her red once said is that she could very well be the reason her friends die, which is a combination of both fears. >_<

Just my thoughts and theories. -v-)/

Ah yes, wonderful character development. Caius fits in nicely with the team and we know a tad bit more from our friends, old and new.

Still though, spiders? V:

Also the fact that apparently, all lab meat are gay...

can we see some fanmade Bloody Michelle (Jane x Michelle) here :V
Macheman7 30th Aug 2017, 6:55 AM edit delete reply
Caius speaking that all lab meat are gay may not be necessarily correct.
There may have been some where it was overlooked, or perhaps he's speaking of his batch.
He might just figure that since his batch was gay, they all are.
It does seem likely, but it brings to mind some questions about free will and whether lab meat have souls or not.

By the way, what's the religious atmosphere, aside from the cult of Enyo? Any major religions?

This scene is so friggin' cute, and those sprites are so adorable, homg, those blankets, too XD;;;

I'm just gonna sit here and happily absorb this conversation for a while XD <3 it's so interesting to see their origins, their fears, their thoughts on Blondie/Jane. We're a good group, guys. <3

Michelle made breakfast, then Jane did... Fuse next?
Dragon_ANGL 30th Aug 2017, 8:48 AM edit delete reply
Well, with my perverted outlook on this chapter, two things of interest here. Michelle didn't vigorously deny the gay charge, she's sleeping next to Jane...Michelle x Jane ship confirmed? And on the other note, Fuse isn't phased at all that Caius is gay and sleeping near him. Did we get Fuse a possible romantic interest (and was Howler his previous one)?

As for what Jane's scared of, probably will be losing control of her body, RED going haywire.

Lastly, let's NOT tell the others that we can hear/see through them while Jane's sleeping. Both for the unadulterated comments they make on the situation & for our satisfaction.
WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 10:30 AM edit delete reply
Dragon, I have to agree with you here. They don't need to be told we can hear them. If the syncing lets that tidbit slip, it will be gradually enough that they'll probably come to accept it. After all, if we're hearing them...

...what are they getting from our head?
Varil 30th Aug 2017, 1:01 PM edit delete reply
I'm actually going to disagree, I think they should know that we can see through their eyes even when asleep.

They're our friends, after all. It'd be useful to get candid info this way, sure, but we shouldn't be violating their privacy any more than is necessary, and they deserve to know the extent of our reach when it comes to them.
WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 10:41 AM edit delete reply
I would also like to credit the glorious MM with how this scene played out.

But it does make an impression. We're a monster to these people, to everyone else in the story. With that and how stressful all this was for them, we need to give a good long thought to morale. Jane Doe is, for all her strengths, a flesh creature capable of things no body should be capable of. Basically a walking tumor. Queen/Enyo is scrambling for a way to beat us before we get to her, Prophet is terrified, we mowed down seemingly unstoppable guards that almost make us look normal.

Michelle and Caius were both grown in tubes to go out and get killed. Fuse is a living bomb. Finch is...Finch. Even with us aside, these people have concerns and we can help them. But until we have a much better relationship with the Red, I think the way to make that happen is the way any human would. We should find ways to support them even when we're not all about to die. Find out what they like, what calms them down, what riles them up. If we're going to be inseparably bound on a physical and mental level, the best thing for all parties considered is to make good on it.

I previously got the impression Michelle had a thing for "blondie". Is now simi-confirmed? But if breeding were the issue I'd've just made them all sterile.
WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 10:50 AM edit delete reply
That's usually a good solution on paper, but to that I say: Jurassic Park. They won't all be sterile forever.
Mochi 30th Aug 2017, 12:10 PM edit delete reply
actually in jurassic park their solution was to make all the dinosaurs female, but they used dna from a species of frog to bridge gaps, and that species they used could change it's sex if the conditions were right, which lead to some of the herds of dinosaurs becoming male. still, though...

WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 1:25 PM edit delete reply
It's a metaphor, Mochi. I've watched the movie.
Guest 30th Aug 2017, 11:07 AM edit delete reply
I leave this to you Jane, but... I think you should tell them. You are afraid of losing yourself. Of becoming the monster that fear you are. Of hurting those you care about....

Also, we should... probably apologize to Caius for getting him into all this.
Mochi 30th Aug 2017, 11:17 AM edit delete reply
this is so fucking cute, and i for one accept and will nurture our new gay sucky cage fighter son who doesn't swear because his boss wouldn't let him (which is kind of ironic when you think of all the other shit that goes on at club elegance) and firmly believe he could kick the ass of every spider.

i also agree with those who stated that jane's biggest fear would be becoming a monster. or maybe everyone close to her thinking she's a monster? also all her friends dying, but everyone is afraid of that. if we were going to be hit with anything by prophet, it would probably be turning into a monster.
WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 11:38 AM edit delete reply
I can't WAIT for the day Prophet tries that! Because I very much doubt he will...

If he makes us think we're turning into a monster, there's NOTHING to stop us from becoming one. >:D
Kitty 30th Aug 2017, 1:51 PM edit delete reply
I agree with Mochi, this scene is friggin' adorable.

Also, does anyone remember what blood-alarm we currently have set? It's useful to know that we can get info while we're asleep, so our alarm will hopefully trigger no matter what kind of level of consciousness we're at. I think we maybe had one set to trigger if Macland did something or was in danger or something? It's probably a good idea to remember that and adjust its programming if necessary.
Mochi 30th Aug 2017, 3:08 PM edit delete reply
it was set to alert us when caius woke up, but i think we probably overrode it when we had to wake him up ourselves to fend off captain wheezey. if we need to, we should be able to set another one at this point.
Kitty 30th Aug 2017, 3:43 PM edit delete reply
Ah yeah, we should probably set one on Macland, then, since he's our sole remaining remote bloodfriend. (Except for the rat, which can do just fine on its own apparently.) Maybe set an alarm for when he wakes up or leaves his house (apartment? do we actually know where Mac lives?) or something. Or perhaps we should set one for when he uses his phone, if we can do that, so we know to listen in?
WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 4:04 PM edit delete reply
We should probably set a blood alarm on when Mac is contacted by Queen/Enyo. If not that, then maybe when he sees Prophet, or sa...

Ooooh! What if we set a blood alarm for the next time he says the word "nurse"? What does he call us again?
Mochi 30th Aug 2017, 4:14 PM edit delete reply
i think it was "that fucking bitch nurse". what a deeply unpleasant man, he is.
WalkerOfSorrow 30th Aug 2017, 5:15 PM edit delete reply
That's what I thought. What are the odds he would audibly say "nurse" and not be talking about us?

You now hear Caius' lines in the voice of Brock Lesnar.

i dunno what brock lesnar sounds like, but i've been imagining caius with a really heavy new york accent, myself.

Let's see... fears?
If I was her... I'd be worried about losing myself, or possibly waking up one day and finding that they were being eaten by some autonomous body function. Even if the chance of that was literally nonexistent, I would probably still be freaking myself out over that. Every moment I could I would probably try to check and make sure something like that wouldn't happen. It'd put me under a lot of stress, and that would cause me to worry about my stress inducing something else.
After reaching that conclusion, I would probably try to lose the antagonization through meditation. Deep breathing. Focusing on who I believe myself to be.
The worry wouldn't go away, but eventually I would be able to cope with it, after realizing that
"I am who I am because of how I want to be."

There is no wrong to yourself, if you try to live the life you think is right.
If kindness guides your will to live, the body will follow your insight.
